What Can I Expect From
Harrington Park and Oran Park Dental Care's Root Canal Treatment?
Root canal treatment – which is an endodontic treatment (or endodontic therapy) – involves removing infected or damaged tissue from inside a tooth’s root canal. The process is necessary when decay or injury causes severe pain.
While root canals have a reputation for being painful, modern techniques and anaesthesia means that most patients only feel minor discomfort during and after their treatment. Root canals can save a damaged tooth from needing to be extracted, allowing you to maintain your natural smile.
It’s important to see your dentist regularly to catch decay early on and potentially avoid the need for root canal therapy.
What If I Leave my Tooth
untreated?
The dental pulp is the soft tissue inside a tooth that contains blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue.
When a tooth becomes damaged or infected, the dental pulp can become inflamed or even die. This causes discomfort, tooth decay and problems for surrounding teeth, which leads to necessary tooth extraction.
Thankfully, with root canal therapy, we are able to avoid tooth extraction by removing the damaged dental pulp, allowing you to enjoy your natural teeth for years to come!

Frequently Asked Questions
A root canal is a dental procedure that removes the infected or damaged pulp inside a tooth, cleans and shapes the interior of the root canal, and seals it to prevent re-infection. The pulp is the soft tissue inside the tooth that contains nerves, blood vessels, and other connective tissue.
A root canal may be necessary if the pulp inside your tooth becomes infected or damaged, usually as a result of decay, injury, or trauma. If left untreated, the infection can spread and cause pain, swelling, and even the loss of the tooth. A root canal can save the damaged or infected tooth and prevent the need for an extraction.
Many patients report that a root canal is no more painful than a regular filling. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia to numb the area, and many patients experience little or no pain during the procedure. After the procedure, some mild discomfort and sensitivity may occur, but this can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
The length of a root canal procedure can vary depending on the complexity of the case, but most root canals can be completed in one or two visits to the dentist, each lasting about an hour.
You can usually eat immediately after a root canal, but it is recommended to avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods for the first few days to allow the treated tooth to fully heal.
